Digital Era: Apple Will Use Ultra-Thin Rigid Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) to Manufacture Micro LED Devices in the Future

Category: Industry News

Release Date: 2021-11-01

Summary: According to the latest report in the digital age, Apple will use ultra-thin rigid PCBs provided by Jianding Technology in the upcoming Mini-LED iPad and MacBook.

According to the latest report from Digital Times, Apple will use ultra-thin rigid PCBs provided by Unimicron Technology in the upcoming Mini-LED iPad and MacBook.

According to insiders, Apple's Mini-LED backlight module will use a three-layer rigid board, which requires higher flatness and hole density compared to traditional rigid PCBs to support mass transfer technology, and the material's shrinkage/expansion rate must be very low.

According to today's report, due to the manufacturer's good cost control and production management capabilities, Apple has included Unimicron Technology in the supply chain for its upcoming Mini-LED devices.

This manufacturer will share the Mini-LED backlight module orders with Taiwan's leading PCB supplier Zhen Ding Technology but needs to purchase high-precision drilling machines and other automated equipment to meet the requirements. It is reported that the supplier will start trial production of ultra-thin rigid board samples and may begin mass production in early 2021.

Apple is eager to adopt Mini-LED technology because it allows for thinner and lighter product designs while offering many of the same advantages as the OLED screens used on the latest iPhones, including good color gamut, high contrast and dynamic range, and local dimming.

According to analysts, Apple has six Mini-LED products under development, expected to appear in 2020 and 2021. Later this year, Apple may first introduce this technology in the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, followed by the 27-inch iMac Pro, 14.1-inch MacBook Pro, 16-inch MacBook Pro, 10.2-inch iPad, and the 7.9-inch iPad Mini.
